Getting started with Ableton Live

February 8th, 2010

Okay.  So last Saturday I went to Rain at the Palms.  The big thing was that Markus Shulz would be playing.  I haven’t really heard anything from him so I wasn’t so interested.  However, the duo that played BEFORE him blew my away.

They’re called Manufactured Superstars.  And let me just say they blow your mind.   They are a duo that just rocks the house.  One guy is working the CDJ’s and mixer.  Another guy is rocking out on a APC 40.  Now, I didn’t know what an APC 40 was.  All I saw was this magical pad the guy was playing with which was hooked up to his laptop.  It was a mult-track software controller to what was going on the laptop.

After Saturday I joined the group’s facebook page.  I posted a comment asking what was the hardware they were using and they responded.  First, I just want to say I’m stoked they actually interact with people.  Second, they referred me to the APC 40 from Akai.  It’s an AWESOME device that interacts with Ableton Live software.

So, I’ve got a 30 day trial with Ableton Live.  I’m going to start messing around with it.  After some time passes, I want to pick up an APC 40 as well.

So this is just a disclaimer.  I have had NO experience in arrangement of music.  I don’t have any formal training or background.  This is me just starting to learn.  If I don’t get entirely pissed off with Ableton Live after 30 days, I’ll buy myself a copy.  I’m a bit excited to see what can come out of it.
